Old Catholic Church now in Nigeria

Bishop Fagbohun

The news about the pioneer Nigerian Police Catholic chaplain is not new again even though some people have not really heard about it in detail. The Old Catholic and Apostolic church had been in existence even before the then Rev Fr. Fagbohun of Ekiti Catholic diocese joined the church which the Catholic Diocese of Ekiti really went against. He states that The formal separation occurred over the issue of Papal’s universal authority. It started in The Netherlands in 1724, creating the first Old Catholic Church.
Fr. Fagbohun joined the religion in the year 2014 when he was being made the first Bishop in Nigeria and who in turn had been ordaining young ones so as to add to the number of the clergy in the country. It is observed that most of the people ordained are those who had been trained in the Roman Catholic Seminaries, who by chance could not make it to the Roman Catholic priesthood. The aim of the Old Catholic and Apostolic Church is totally against the aim of the Roman Catholic church which makes the Roman Catholic states that the Old Catholic and Apostolic church is not part and have no link with the Church- Roman Catholic.

There are lots of differences between The Roman Catholic church and The Old Catholic and Apostolic church doctrines. When the Bishop Fagbohun was asked about the clergies getting married, he responded as:
our clerics marry and those who have the gift of celibacy exercise it. That was the tradition in the early church. Peter was and remained married. 1 Corinthians 9:5 revealed that the apostles, except perhaps, John and Paul, were married. Jesus Christ never forbade his apostles from marrying. Even Paul that was not married said it’s a gift. In 1Timothy 4, Paul referred to those who forbid marriage as hypocrites. Celibacy vow and rule without having the gift of celibacy is hypocrisy. Experience has justified this. The Old Catholics believe in Jesus, biblical and apostolic teachings and traditions, not man-made, imposed rules. Celibacy is a Roman Catholic, not God’s rule. We believe that no one should lay another foundation contrary to the one laid by Jesus Christ

The above assertion states that The Old Catholic church's doctrines are different from the Roman Catholic Church doctrines.
Therefore, the Old Catholic church is growing within Nigeria and has her branches in Lagos, Abuja, Ekiti.

  3. There will always be rebels. Even in heaven, Lucifer rebelled against God and was cast down into hell. Some people due to their ego cannot obey and keep the rules of the Catholic church which they swore to abide with. I am not worried for the Catholic church's continued existence and growth, because Christ Himself promised that the gate of hell shall not prevail against the church He founded. I pray for God's mercy on all His people.

  10. i belong to the Roman Catholic. We all are for Christ. The church on earth must always expect change in times, and change being constant must always address pressing issues in the church. The inability of the authorities of the church to bend down and listen to complaints bothering members will always bring secession in the church, and when this happens none should criticize. As long as they are not against Christ they are for Christ. Don't stop them because they are your members.

    1. You most definitely did not research why the breakout before you made this conclusion.

You should not expect the church to reject it's own dogmas, now would you?
The Roman Catholic Church have not openly condemned their practices.

      Their Eucharistic celebrations are valid.

    3. When a dogma is not in conformity with the Bible itself should outrightly be rejected. Moreover the Roman Catholic Church teaches that celibacy isn't a dogma nor a Doctrine but a discipline and which have over the years been reviewed in certain situations; e.g. June 1980 witnessed the Vatican's ratification of the Pastoral provision that allowed Anglicans and Episcopalians who joined the Roman Church as priests to retain there wives. This goes to confirm what it decreed in the 2nd Vatican Council Decree on the Life of Priests, that celibacy isn't essential by the very nature of the priesthood. See Presbyterorum Ordinis, 16. Again only recently, the Amazon bishops voted overwhelmingly for the Ordination of married men 'viri probati' (Spanish - men of 'proven virtue') which goes to align with the provisions of Titus 1:6 "if any one is blameless, the husband of one wife..." which St. Paul mentioned as pre-qualification for election to the position of elder (presbyter or bishops). So Bishop Raphael Fagboun has only joined the heroes of faith and great reformers in the Church who stood for return to orthodoxy and orthopraxy. Such Schisms are rife in the history of the Church and they point to the unicity in diversity for which Christ himself forbade his disciples from antagonising. See Mk 10:38-40. In other words, in all things essential - Unity (Note: Not uniformity), in non-essentials - Liberty and in all things - Charity.

Even ur roman Catholic priests and bishops knows that there is Old Catholic and independent Catholicism. Half baked or half knowledge is dangerous. Study to make ur self approved.
